Zhejiang-Malaysia Joint Laboratory for Rare Medicinal Resources (Zhejiang Provincial International Joint Laboratory)

The Zhejiang‑Malaysia Joint Laboratory for Rare Medicinal Resources is co‑built by Wenzhou‑Kean University and the University of Malaya. Established in response to the initiative for building a China‑Malaysia community with a shared future, it was approved as a provincial‑level international joint laboratory in 2025. Leveraging the unique rare medicinal resources and research strengths of the University of Malaya, the laboratory focuses on the conservation, alternative development and sustainable utilization of rare medicinal resources. It prioritizes tackling challenges including the identification and replication of functional active substances and the screening of sustainable alternative germplasm resources, and promotes the transformation of research achievements into high‑value‑added functional products.

The laboratory team has achieved multiple major outcomes. It completed the world’s first pangolin genome map, took the lead in launching an international pangolin‑conservation initiative, and made breakthroughs in captive‑breeding challenges, forming an innovative paradigm integrating scientific research and practical implementation. The team has undertaken 60 research projects in total, with total funding of RMB 833.893 million, and obtained 7 invention patents.
