Topic: Oriental Culture, “Life Aesthetics” and European and American Modernist Poetry

In the mid of 19th century, with the ports opening and the Meiji Restoration Movement, Japan had strengthened its political and economic and trade exchanges with the west, its art and culture was also gradually known by westerners. Thus there was the rise of Japonisme in Europe and the United States, but the art treasury of China was soon opened to the Occident, and by the early 20th century, Chinese cultural influence on western literature was more penetrating.

The “Japonisme” and the “Chinoisme” in Europe and America at the end of the 19th century became another motive force of the modernism movement in Europe and America.

In historical context, the lecture analyzes how those Chinese works of art that have left their hometown and came to the Occident as the media of the Oriental culture’s spreading, conveying the artistic idea and life wisdom of the Oriental poetics, and how Chinese classical poetry has influenced modern and contemporary American poetry, thus promoting the “revival” of American “New Poetry”.
