The forgotten lifeline of Southeast China — “Prosperity” and control in Wenzhou during wartime
Lecture Introduction
The victory of China’s all-out war of resistance was not only related to military warfare, but also to economic warfare. As the “only port in the southeast”, Wenzhou not only became an important hub for the Chinese authorities to export native products and exchange strategic materials during the war, but also the main base for the authorities to rush and transport industrial products from the coast to the mainland, so it was called the starting point of the “Southeast lifeline” of China’s Anti-Japanese War! With the concentration of import and export goods in Wenzhou, there was a previously unused business “boom” in the area, many people were involved in industrial and commercial investment, and even some remote mountain villages became regional alternative industrial production centers. This “prosperity” not only attracted the government to strengthen economic control in Wenzhou, but also a series of changes in the social power structure. There is even an implicit link between this story and the “Wenzhou model” that emerged four decades later.
