Wenzhou-Kean University

Wenzhou-Kean University (www.wku.edu.cn) (hereafter WKU) is a Chinese-American jointly established higher education institution with independent legal person status. On March 31, 2014, the Ministry of Education of China approved the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University. In July 2014, the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University was listed as one of the achievements of the Fifth Round of China-U.S. High-level Cultural Exchanges, which is Zhejiang Province’s only educational project on the list. In June 2018, the Chinese Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Province listed WKU as one of the exemplary China-foreign cooperative universities, supporting it to become “an internationalized and world-class university”. In November 2019, WKU was approved to offer master’s and doctoral programs.

Wenzhou-Kean University is dedicated to the mission of “providing students with different ways of development” by introducing educational resources, philosophy, and academic system from a world-class university in the U.S. Being well-knit with the actual conditions of China and the needs in developing regional economy and cultures, the University strives for excellence in building an international university with a world-class education.

The campus of Wenzhou-Kean University is located in a beautiful township called Li’ao in Wenzhou – one of the renowned hometowns of overseas Chinese. Covering an area of 494 acres in land planning, the University currently has about 4,400 on-campus students.

 

Kean University

Founded in 1855, Kean University was the first public post-secondary institution in New Jersey. In recent years, Kean University has developed campuses in Union, Ocean County, and Skylands. Its main campus in Union is only about 32 kilometers away from the New York City.

Kean University has been elevated to “national university” status in the U.S. News & World Report 2022-2023 Best Colleges rankings, reflecting the University’s continued ascent in research and scholarship. Kean ranked 46th out of 439 national universities in increasing social mobility for students, a measure recognizing Kean’s success in supporting economically disadvantaged students throughout their path to graduation. This is the fourth year in a row that Kean has been recognized for social mobility, the first three years as a regional university.

The University is also named one of the most economically and ethnically diverse national universities in the United States, and is included on the list of top public schools among national universities. In recent years, Kean University has grown into a comprehensive and global institution of higher education. In 2021, it achieved the status of New Jersey’s fifth research university and the First Urban Research University. It serves a diverse population of more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with its campus area covering 247 acres. The University offers more than 50 undergraduate programs and more than 70 options for graduate study, with business, health care, technology and education programs as its featured programs. Kean University is accredited to confer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

*The above tuition refers to the tuition required for completing the minimum graduate credits during graduate study. Additional tuition will be charged for pre-requisite/bridge courses if required upon acceptance; tuition will also be charged for non-required courses which students register personally.

Step 2: Complete and submit the application via the Kean University Online Application System.

Step 3: Follow up relevant notification regarding application progress and admission decision in the WKU Graduate Application System.

English Proficiency Requirements

Regardless of U.S. residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students who have a bachelor’s degree from an institution outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language. Kean University references the CIA’s World Fact Book as the authority of a country’s principal language.

Score reports must be from tests taken within the past two years and submitted directly to us from the testing service.

Kean University accepts the following standardized tests to determine the English proficiency of its applicants:

  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Minimum Score: Internet-based / TOEFL at home: 79; Paper-based: 550

  1. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Minimum Score: 6.5

  1. Duolingo English Test

Minimum Score: 105

 

GRE/GMAT/MAT Requirements

Please refer to the individual requirements of each program. Scores of GRE General Test at home are acceptable.

 

Waiver Policy

  1. TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo Waiver Policy: In order to waive the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test requirement, applicants may submit the following:

1) Official documentation stating that they have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction

2) Official transcripts showing that they have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university

  1. GRE/GMAT/MAT Waiver Policy: Please refer to the individual requirements of each program.

 

Graduate Scholarships and Assistantships

Wenzhou-Kean University offers abundant graduate scholarships and assistantships to all applicants. Both full-time and part-time applicants have the opportunity to be awarded graduate scholarships and assistantships. Specific results will be included in the final acceptance letter.

Graduate assistantship positions are classified as Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) and Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA). A GTA is responsible for performing teaching or teaching-related duties including assisting a professor to conduct lab, grade papers, or prepare lectures, and/or teaching his/her own course under supervision of a professor. A GRA is responsible for performing research projects for an academic or administrative unit and/or assisting a faculty member to carrying out research projects.

Wenzhou-Kean University will award graduate scholarships and assistantships based on the comprehensive evaluation of applicants’ educational background, academic achievements, research and work experience, etc. Scholarship decisions are made upon thorough evaluation of application materials, in some cases with the consideration of GTA/GRA positions.

 

Application Deadline

Application for 2024 graduate programs will be implemented on a rolling basis, and the application deadlines is June 30, 2024. The entry semester for 2024 cohort is Fall 2024. Applicants are encouraged to apply for WKU graduate programs at their earliest convenience.

A GRA is responsible for performing research projects for an academic or administrative unit and/or assisting a faculty member to carrying out research projects.

  1. Full graduate scholarship: waives the tuition and dorm fees (if the applicant meets the dorm eligibility requirements).
  2. Half graduate scholarship: waives half tuition and half dorm fees (if the applicant meets the dorm eligibility requirements).
  3. Full graduate assistantship: 2,000 RMB per month for master’s students, and 4,000 RMB per month for doctoral students.
  4. Half graduate assistantship: 1,000 RMB per month for master’s students, and 2,000 RMB per month for doctoral students.

Wenzhou-Kean University will award graduate scholarships and assistantships based on the comprehensive evaluation of applicants’ educational background, academic achievements, research and work experience, etc. Scholarship decisions are made upon thorough evaluation of application materials, in some cases with the consideration of GTA/GRA positions.

Application for 2022 graduate programs will be implemented on a rolling basis, and the application deadlines are March 31, 2022 and June 30, 2022. The entry semester for 2022 cohort is Fall 2022.

Wenzhou-Kean University (www.wku.edu.cn) (hereafter WKU) is a Chinese-American jointly established higher education institution with independent legal person status. On March 31, 2014, the Ministry of Education of China approved the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University. In July 2014, the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University was listed as one of the achievements of the Fifth Round of China-U.S. High-level Cultural Exchanges, which is Zhejiang Province’s only educational project on the list. In June 2018, the Chinese Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Province listed WKU as one of the exemplary China-foreign cooperative universities, supporting it to become “an internationalized and world-class university”. In November 2019, WKU was approved to offer master’s and doctoral programs.

English Proficiency Requirements

Regardless of U.S. residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students who have a bachelor’s degree from an institution outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language. Kean University references the CIA’s World Fact Book as the authority of a country’s principal language.

Score reports must be from tests taken within the past two years and submitted directly to us from the testing service.

Kean University accepts the following standardized tests to determine the English proficiency of its applicants:

  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Minimum Score: Internet-based: 79; Paper-based: 550

  1. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Minimum Score: 6.5

  1. Duolingo English Test

Minimum Score: 100

Waiver Policy

  1. TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo Waiver Policy: In order to waive the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test requirement, applicants may submit the following:
    • ● Official documentation stating that they have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction
    • ● Official transcripts showing that they have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university
  1. GRE/GMAT/MAT Waiver Policy: Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the standardized test application requirement such as GRE, GMAT, or MAT has been waived for the Fall 2021 application.

English Language Courses

Applicants who are admitted to the graduate programs but do not meet the English proficiency requirements need to take designated English language courses before enrolling academic courses. The applicants shall be fully admitted after completion of the designated English language courses. Such English course information will be notified to applicants when admission decisions are made.

Graduate Scholarships and Assistantships

Wenzhou-Kean University offers abundant graduate scholarships and assistantships to all applicants. Both full-time and part-time applicants have the opportunity to be awarded graduate scholarships and assistantships.

Wenzhou-Kean University offers full and half graduate scholarships and full and half graduate assistantships. Graduate assistantship positions are classified as Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) and Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA). A GTA is responsible for performing teaching or teaching-related duties including assisting a professor to conduct lab, grade papers, or prepare lectures, and/or teaching his/her own course under supervision of a professor.   1. TOEFL iBT – 80 overall and 21 in each category or

English language requirement is waived for applicants who meet at least one of the following criteria:

  1. Have earned a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university from an English-speaking country/region with at least three years or above overseas study experience, or a Master’s degree from an accredited university from an English-speaking country/region.
  2. Have earned a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree from an accredited university from a country/region recognized by Wenzhou-Kean University.
  3. Have earned a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree from Wenzhou-Kean University and other Chinese-foreign jointly established higher education institutions with independent legal person status.

 

English Language Courses

Applicants who are admitted to the graduate programs but do not meet the English language entry requirements need to take English language courses before enrolling academic courses.

Applicants are required to take 3 courses: ESL 0403, ESL 0405, and ENG 1430, if:

  1. TOEFL iBT – overall score is lower than 80 (no lower than 70) or
  2. IELTS – overall score is lower than 6.5 (no lower than 5.5)

Applicants will be advised to take 1 or 2 English language courses if:

  1. TOEFL iBT – overall score meets 80 but one category score is lower than 21 or
  2. IELTS – overall score meets 6.5 but one category score is lower than 6.0

 

Timeline for 2020 Admissions

Application deadline: June 30, 2020 (late applications will be considered subject to place availability).

English language test scores, GRE score (if already taken), and/or degree/diploma certificates should normally be received by the Office of Academic Affairs before July 15, 2020.

Graduate program admissions offered: June – July, 2020.
