Program Description


Wenzhou-Kean University’s Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) program is dedicated to developing the next generation of educational leaders, and encourage them to conduct education research and solve existing education problems in an innovative way. The program is based on an innovative, interdisciplinary, professional-oriented model that integrates coursework and practical experience, culminating in a full-year internship in a school district or community education agency. The doctoral program prepares future administrators with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively lead school districts and educational organizations and is designed to create an advanced and diverse learning environment which supports personal and professional growth. Further, this program trains the school leaders to be effective consumers of research. This program mainly offers courses such as: Leadership, Personnel Administration & Negotiations, Program Assessment and Evaluation, School, Community Partnerships and Educational Research, Clinical Practicum in School District, and other professional courses.

Important features of the program include:

  • Collaboration among leaders from schools, school districts, and other educational and community agencies;
  • Study of current research, theories and practices in education, leadership, policy, curriculum, and instruction;
  • Opportunity to engage in applied (action) research, resulting in a doctoral dissertation;
  • An extensive internship in a school district or other educational setting, such as the State of New Jersey.

Admission Requirements


  1. Application form for Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) program
  2. Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from a college or university recognized by the Ministry of Education of China and Kean University
  3. Statement of purpose
  4. Official transcripts of all colleges or universities attended
  5. 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) in last degree attained (lower GPAs may be considered based on overall strength of the application)
  6. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) taken within five years of application
    Notes: GRE score can be received by the Office of Academic Affairs at the end of the first academic year, which means GRE score is no longer one of the required documents for application. Applicants who have already taken GRE can still include their GRE score in the application for evaluation.

  8. Substantial experience working in education or family-support agencies
  9. Two letters of recommendation
  10. Official TOEFL or IELTS score reports

Graduation Requirements


The Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) curriculum is comprised of 18 courses (3 credits each) for a total of 54 credits. Upon successful completion of 54 credits, students must maintain their status as matriculated students until they successfully complete and defend their dissertation. To maintain their matriculation status, students must register for a 2-credit course (Dissertation Continuation EDD 7103), while they work on their dissertation.
